At more than one million acres and with over 1,000 lakes and hundreds of miles or rivers, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is truly the world's most exceptional canoe country. As a federal wilderness area, managed by the U.S. Forest Service, much of the BWCAW is accessible only by paddle or on foot. The BWCAW is located along the Minnesota-Ontario border and is contiguous with the 1.2 million acre Quetico Provincial Park. A virtually endless number of trip possibilities are available in the BWCAW and Quetico. Trips can include canoeing on huge lakes- such as Basswood, Crooked, La Croix, Brule, or Saganaga- or on literally hundreds of small quiet lakes, or even a journey down dozens of wilderness river systems. Exceptional fishing, solitude, and opportunities for viewing moose, bear, bald eagles, loons, and many other species of wildlife, is all a part of the Boundary Waters experience.
For the experienced outdoor adventurer, a good map, a sturdy canoe and all your best and lightest camping gear is all it takes to enjoy a trip into the wilderness. For the inexperienced, numerous outfitters in the area can provide you with everything you'll need to make the trip a safe and successful one.
