The much publicized “Cold War” between Tower and Embarrass received another round of national publicity this past Sunday. A film crew from the CBS Sunday Morning program was in the area last week, filming for a feature story on Roland Fowler’s quest to become the coldest weather-recording location in the lower 48 states. Fowler is the longtime official weather observer from Embarrass and his weather station is frequently the coldest in the nation. He has previously been featured on numerous national broadcasts, including spots on the NBC Nightly News and the Weather Channel.
Fowler and other residents of Embarrass have sought to promote the rural township as the real icebox of the nation, even though Tower, just up the road, holds the state record low of -60 degrees, set on Feb. 2, 1996. Malfunctioning thermometers prevented Fowler from recording an official temperature that morning.
The CBS Morning Show crew, featuring interviewer Bill Geist, spent two days filming the segment, which aired Jan. 24.
